Two areas of central Africa, between Zaire and Tanzania. Formerly part of German East Africa, they were occupied by Belgian Congo forces during World War I and subsequently were administered by Belgium under a League of Nations (later U.N.) mandate.
They became
independent in 1962 as the Republic of Rwanda and the Kingdom of
Burundi. |
