Melitta is the Latin name for Malta. The name Melitta means "honey".

In the colonial times Malta was a colony of England. So it's obvious to represent Melitta äs a woman (compare Britannia, Germania, Helvetia). In 1922-26 Malta had issued two series stamps picturing Melitta.
